Caldecott Trailhead
Caldecott trailhead is a city park at the transition point between the regional open spaces that dot the East Bay Hills and the City of Oakland. This urban edge setting simultaneously provides an immersive step into nature and views of the city. Built in the 1980's, and surviving the fire of 1991, this park is in need of renovation and includes baseball fields, a creek, wetland, restroom facilities, and an informal trail connection to hillside regional parks at the base of the canyon. In the Spring of 2018 BTD, and our subconsultants, began to evaluate the condition and renovation needs of the park, run an interactive community decision making process with a City technical committee, create a conceptual designs with alternatives, and evaluate the fiscal feasibility of the community inspired scope which has led to a park renovation project scheduled to complete permitting in Summer of 2020.
After a three rounds of community meetings, and extensive information gathering among the City staff the finalized design will include:
- an ADA accessible path system throughout out the trailhead park connecting all of the existing and proposed site elements including access to the informal trailhead;
- restroom and parking lot renovations to provide access as well as substantially extend the functional life of the existing infrastructure;
- a universal access playground integrated into nature play opportunities which reflect the rugged natural setting of the park; and,
- space and infrastructure for a volunteer led fire-scaping demonstration garden.
