Memorial Nature Play Space

BAY TREE DESIGN worked with a private school in the Bay Area to incorporate a mature olive grove into the school’s play spaces. The design of the space needed to embody two tenets: honoring the school’s philosophy to “engage, live and laugh in their world” and celebrate the life and memory of a special student. The space simultaneously honors the student while bringing in his sense of playfulness. Custom wood platforms that provide places for imaginative play, group learning and solitary reflection. The platforms were sized and sited for play synergy, views into the forest and to draw the attention to the relationship of the beautiful and mature trees of the forest. The primary platform features the student’s name engraved in the wood and inlayed with mirror to reflect the dappled light of the grove.
