IPS/Butler University Lab School, Master Plan
“Every place has a soul, an identity, and seeking to discover it and relate to it means learning to recognize your own soul as well.” Dialogues with Places, Reggio Children
Bay Tree Design worked with the staff, community (adults and children) and University representatives of this public Reggio Emilia based school to take their philosophy of “bring the outdoors in and the indoors out” and help them with their goal of making the environment a strong and inspirational third teacher. The conceptual plan transforms the tabla rasa that had been handed to the school into a rich tableau of environmental systems, integration of ecological processes, place-based design, outdoor learning labs, and a play-supported environment. The core of the design concept is characterized by the four elements; earth, air, water and fire and how these elements provide for learning, beneficial risk, and engaging play and are central to the space and experience. This project seeks to bring global best practices for green schoolyards to Indianapolis and create a model for other schools in the region.
