McKinley Elementary School Green Schoolyard

In 2011, SFUSD built upon the goals and aspirations of the 2003 and 2006 Bond projects in which BAY TREE DESIGN played a key role in developing. BTD worked with McKinley Elementary School to form and realize their specific vision of a living schoolyard. This effort began with a series of community participation workshops to create a masterplan that reflects the school community’s values and aspirations.

The community process created a design program that doubles the nature play opportunities on campus, includes an outdoor science lab, shade trees and playful pavement striping that encourages physical development, math instruction and open ended creative play.

Construction was completed in summer 2017. Trees and other plantings will be installed as part of the school community’s stewardship efforts during the academic year.
